Baluster

A series of supports closely spaced for a railing. Also referred to as a spindle. Installed as a saftey measure, balusters must be placed such that the space is no more than 4-inches apart. Inspectors use a 4-inch ball as a way to test the spacing.

Beyond spacing, balusters need to withstand 50 lbs. of pressure applied over a 1-square-foot area.
