Modern architraves are typically used as moldings around door openings or baseboards. To differentiate, architraves come in unique profile styles and finishes. Often architraves will be paired with skirting boards to achieve a seamless look throughout the room.

In antiquity, the architrave is the placed at the bottom of an entablature below the frieze and cornice and also set atop columns.
